Inside the Saturday Poker Supper

29 August 2026·Grace Holloway·5 min read

A poker tournament should not be serving lamb ribs. Ours does — and it has quietly become the most loyal weekly event in the building.

The accidental tradition

When we took over catering for the Saturday series, the brief was 'feed them something better than pizza'. The first week's supper was leftover grill-menu items — lamb ribs, smoked potatoes, a green sauce we were testing. Three weeks later players were registering early specifically for the break. The poker was the hook; the food was the retention.

How the night actually runs

Buy-in at the cage from 18:00, cards in the air at 19:00, a 20,000-chip starting stack and a structure designed to finish by 01:00. The supper service hits the rail at the first break — players order from a four-item grill menu and eat at their seats between hands. The final table gets champagne; the winner also gets dinner for two at the restaurant.

The rail-side supper — players ordering between hands

"The only tournament in Adelaide where the meal break is better than the bubble."

Why the food matters to the game

Tournament poker has a reputation problem — it attracts people who think the room should feel like a back room. Serving real food changes the register entirely. The rail-side supper signals that this is a venue night, not a card night, and that shift brings a completely different crowd: dates, groups, people who came for dinner and stayed for the structure.

The High Roller difference

The monthly $500 buy-in night is where the catering gets properly serious — champagne service from the first deal, a three-course menu served during the dinner break, and a private salon for the final table. It is the closest thing Adelaide has to a casino supper club, and it sells out faster than the weekly series.

If you want to play

Register at the cage before 18:45 on Saturdays. Beginners are genuinely welcome — dealers explain rulings, the structure forgives early mistakes, and the food alone justifies the entry fee. Non-players can eat the same menu in the dining room next door.
